Od dubokog čučnja do ozbiljnog treninga nogu – šta donosi Pendulum čučanj

Od dubokog čučnja do ozbiljnog treninga nogu – šta donosi Pendulum Squat

There are leg exercises we simply do – and then there are exercises that make us start negotiating with ourselves after only a few repetitions about how many sets we really need.

Pendulum Squat from the Apollon Fitness group definitely belongs to this second category.

The Pendulum Squat combines a squat pattern with a guided machine trajectory and stable body support. For a recreational lifter, this represents an interesting alternative to the classic squat, while it allows bodybuilders to put very serious load on the quadriceps and gluteal musculature, without the need for balancing a barbell to be the main limiting factor.

But why has the Pendulum Squat been so popular in recent years among people training for hypertrophy? Is it really that good for the quadriceps? And can it replace the barbell squat?

The answer lies in biomechanics – but also in what we know today from scientific research on hypertrophy.

What is the Pendulum Squat actually?

In a classic squat, the body and the load move through space, while the lifter must simultaneously produce force and maintain balance.

With the Pendulum Squat machine, the situation is different.

The movement is determined by the construction and trajectory of the lever system, while the body is supported by the machine. The lifter places their feet on the platform and performs the movement through knee and hip flexion and extension.

The result is a movement that resembles a squat but provides a completely different feeling of load.

That is precisely why the Apollon Fitness Pendulum Squat should not be viewed as a “squat for people who don’t want to squat.”

It is a separate tool for leg training.

Why do stable machines suit bodybuilders so much?

A bodybuilder has a very specific goal.

They are primarily interested in muscular hypertrophy.

If you are trying to develop your quadriceps, the ideal exercise is not necessarily the one that requires the greatest amount of overall coordination. Sometimes, it is precisely the extra stability that allows the lifter to direct more attention and effort toward the target musculature.

That is one of the biggest advantages of the Pendulum Squat machine.

The back and shoulders are supported, the path is defined by the machine's construction, and the lifter can concentrate on what is most important to them at that moment:

generating force with their legs.

This becomes especially interesting as the set approaches failure.

Pendulum Squat and the quadriceps – why is this combination so popular?

The quadriceps extend the knee, so any serious squat that includes significant knee flexion and extension can be a powerful stimulus for them.

With the Pendulum Squat, the body position and machine construction can allow for pronounced knee bending with a stable torso.

And here we come to a very interesting part of modern hypertrophy literature.

Research on different squat variations has shown that range of motion depth can influence muscular adaptation. In one study comparing deeper and shallower squats, deeper squats produced greater changes in certain lower body muscles.

This does not mean that everyone has to squat as deep as possible.

But it does mean that depth should not be automatically sacrificed just to use heavier weight.

What happens in the bottom position is interesting for hypertrophy

In recent years, one question has attracted a lot of attention from researchers:

Is training a muscle in a more elongated position particularly important for growth?

An increasing number of studies and systematic reviews suggest that training at longer muscle lengths can be a very effective stimulus for hypertrophy.

This makes the Pendulum Squat particularly interesting.

When we descend into a deeper position in a controlled manner, the angles at the knee and hip change, and certain muscles work under different mechanical conditions than they would during short, partial repetitions.

That is why the last few centimeters of a quality descent can be much more interesting for a bodybuilder than two more plates on the machine.

But the key word is quality.

How deep should you perform the Pendulum Squat?

There is no one depth that is ideal for every person.

Ankle mobility, hip anatomy, limb length, the lifter’s experience, and the machine’s construction itself all influence the position that will be optimal.

That is why there is no need to force a depth on the Apollon Fitness Pendulum Squat that causes pain or a loss of control.

Instead, the goal should be:

the greatest possible controlled and individually tolerated range of motion with a stable body position.

If you can go deeper and maintain control – great.

If you have to shift your body position, lose stability, or feel pain just to go a few more centimeters lower – that is no longer the same story.

Pendulum Squat or a regular squat – which is better?

The shortest answer is:

it depends on what you are trying to achieve.

The barbell squat is an excellent complex exercise that requires coordination of a large number of muscle groups, torso stabilization, and control of a free load.

The Pendulum Squat provides more external stability.

To develop the general ability to perform a barbell squat, it is logical to train the squat itself.

But if the goal is primarily leg hypertrophy, there is no reason to treat these two exercises as enemies.

Studies comparing free weights and machines show an interesting picture: specific gains in strength generally favor the modality you are training, while for hypertrophy, there is no convincing evidence that free weights are universally superior to machines.

In other words:

a muscle does not grow because it knows whether you are holding a barbell or sitting in a machine.

Why is stability important when we approach failure?

Imagine the last three repetitions of a heavy barbell squat.

The legs are tired.

But at the same time, you have to control your torso, the position of the bar, your balance, and the path of your entire body.

With the Pendulum Squat machine, part of those demands is taken over by the machine’s construction.

This can allow local muscle fatigue in the legs to become a greater factor in finishing the set.

For a bodybuilder, this is very interesting.

If the goal is for the quadriceps to receive a powerful stimulus, not every set has to be a test of balance, coordination, and mental courage under a barbell simultaneously.

Sometimes you just want your legs to work.

And they work.

And then they work a little more.

Do you have to perform the Pendulum Squat to failure?

No.

Research on training to muscular failure does not show that total failure is necessary for muscle development.

For hypertrophy, it is important for the sets to be demanding enough, but that does not mean every one has to end in a moment where you physically cannot perform the next repetition.

With the Pendulum Squat, an advanced bodybuilder can occasionally use sets very close to failure, especially since the machine provides a high level of stability.

But there is a difference between:

“the quadriceps can no longer produce force with quality”

and

“my technique fell apart three repetitions ago, but I’m still trying.”

Those are not the same things.

How many repetitions are best for the Pendulum Squat?

There is no magical bodybuilding range.

The famous 8–12 repetitions can work excellently, but research shows that we can achieve hypertrophy through a fairly wide range of loads when the sets are demanding enough.

That is why the Apollon Fitness Pendulum Squat can be used in different ways.

You can perform heavier sets with a lower number of repetitions.

You can use it in the classic mid-range.

And you can do a longer set of 15 or more controlled repetitions.

The third option has one downside:

around the twelfth repetition, you start wondering why you chose leg training as a hobby in the first place.

Foot position is not a magic muscle switch

As with the Leg Press, there are many gym rules regarding foot position on squat machines.

“Feet lower for quads.”

“Feet higher for glutes.”

The reality is more complex.

Changing foot position alters the geometry of the movement, the angles at the knee and hip, and the way a particular person goes through the squat. Therefore, it can change the relative demand on individual muscle groups.

But there is no small shift in foot placement that will completely exclude one muscle group and include another.

With the Pendulum Squat, find a position that allows you stability, the desired depth, and a natural knee path.

Only then experiment with smaller changes.

Quadriceps or glutes – what is actually working?

Both.

A squat is a multi-joint movement.

The quadriceps play a major role in knee extension, while the gluteal musculature contributes significantly to hip extension.

It is interesting that research into different squat depths has found differences in glute adaptations, which further shows why the claim “a squat is only for the quads” is not accurate.

With the Apollon Fitness Pendulum Squat, how much relative work ends up on individual muscles will depend on foot position, depth, the lifter’s anatomy, and the machine’s path itself.

That is why we can view this machine as a serious multi-joint exercise for the lower body, with very significant potential for quadriceps training.

Where to put the Pendulum Squat in a leg workout?

If quadriceps development is one of your main priorities, the Pendulum Squat can be the first major exercise of the workout.

For example:

Pendulum Squat → Leg Press → Leg Extension → Leg Curl

But if you want to keep the barbell squat as the main movement:

Barbell Squat → Pendulum Squat → Leg Extension → Leg Curl

can represent a completely logical combination.

A third possibility is particularly interesting to advanced bodybuilders – spreading different exercises between two leg workouts.

One workout can be more squat-dominant, while another uses the Apollon Fitness Pendulum Squat as the main movement.

That way, you don’t have to try to cram every good exercise into one workout.

How many sets are necessary?

Scientific literature on training volume generally shows that more quality sets can produce greater hypertrophy – but only up to a certain point.

As volume grows, the additional benefit of each subsequent set becomes smaller.

That is why the point is not to do another five sets after five heavy Pendulum Squat sets just because “more means better.”

It is important to look at the total weekly volume for the quadriceps, including squats, Leg Press, lunges, Leg Extension, and other exercises you are already doing.

The best volume is not the largest volume you can survive.

It is the amount of quality work you can recover from and make long-term progress on.

How to track actual progress on the Pendulum Squat?

Machines have one major advantage for bodybuilding – they can make training very repeatable.

If you use the same foot position, the same depth, and similar technique, you can track progress very accurately.

Let’s say you do 10 quality repetitions on the Pendulum Squat machine today.

In a few weeks with the same load, you do 13.

After that, you increase the weight and start from 9 or 10 again.

That is a simple form of progressive overload.

But there is a condition:

do not increase the weight by decreasing the depth.

If you squatted deeply last month, and today you are doing half-reps with a heavier load, the number on the machine is indeed higher – but the comparison is no longer the same.

The biggest enemy of the Pendulum Squat is not weight – it is the ego

The Pendulum Squat can take a serious load.

And that is where the problem starts.

We add one plate.

It goes well.

We add a second.

It still goes.

The third already changes the depth.

The fourth turns the squat into a few centimeters of movement.

But the number of plates looks fantastic.

If the goal is bodybuilding, the quadriceps don’t know how many people saw your load.

They care about the stimulus.

That is why, on the Apollon Fitness Pendulum Squat, first try to perform a higher-quality repetition.

Only then a heavier one.

Why does the Pendulum Squat have a place in a serious gym?

A good commercial gym should not offer ten machines that do practically the same thing.

It should offer different tools for different goals.

The Pendulum Squat from the Apollon Fitness group adds exactly such an option for lower body training – a guided squat pattern that differs significantly from the classic Leg Press, Leg Extension, or free-weight squat.

For a beginner, it can be a way to get acquainted with a loaded squat pattern within a stable construction.

For an experienced lifter, it represents yet another possibility for progression.

And for a bodybuilder, it can become one of the main exercises for serious quadriceps and complete lower-body training.

The Pendulum Squat won’t build big legs – your training will

No machine is magic.

Not the barbell squat.

Not the Leg Press.

Not the Pendulum Squat.

What makes the difference is what you do on that machine week after week.

Quality technique.

Sufficient range of motion.

Progressive increase in demands.

Sufficient volume.

Nutrition.

Recovery.

And enough time for all that to turn into a result.

Apollon Fitness Pendulum Squat can be an extremely powerful tool in that process, especially when you want to seriously load your legs in a stable and repeatable movement pattern.

That is why the next time you step onto the Pendulum Squat, don’t look at how many plates you can put on first.

Look at how well you can perform the movement.

And then try to make that same movement stronger, more controlled, and heavier over the coming months.

Because big legs don’t come from one brutal set.

They happen when you can repeat quality brutal sets for long enough that the body has no choice but to adapt.
